Virtual Clinical Supervision
Short Description
Virtual supervision requires intentional structure, clear boundaries, and relational skill-building to maintain clinical quality, ethical practice, and psychological safety across distance rather than functioning as “supervision on Zoom.” Designed for clinical supervisors and mental health professionals across settings, it integrates ethics and risk management with relationship-centered supervision skills. Participants will examine how power, identity, access, and technology shape supervisory relationships and develop practical tools for contracting, documentation, feedback, and engagement that can be applied immediately in practice.
Learning Objectives
• Identify core ethical, legal, and professional considerations specific to virtual clinical supervision (e.g., confidentiality, informed consent, jurisdictional issues, technology risks).
• Explain how virtual settings can impact the supervisory alliance, communication patterns, and power dynamics (including cultural and accessibility factors).
• Apply practical strategies to structure virtual supervision sessions, including contracting, agenda-setting, documentation, and follow-up routines.
• Analyze common virtual supervision challenges (e.g., disengagement, boundary drift, crisis/risk moments, technology disruptions) and determine appropriate supervisory responses.
• Create an individualized “Virtual Supervision Action Plan” that includes at least three concrete changes to implement within the next 30 days.
Each topic can be adapted to your audience, timeframe, and delivery format, with a minimum of 1 hour of instruction. The summary on this page is intentionally brief; detailed descriptions, learning objectives, and sample agendas are available upon request.
